We're Having A Party!

Posted: 6th May, 2008

RANGERS today received verbal confirmation from UEFA that the Club can proceed with plans to host a massive UEFA Cup Final event at Ibrox by beaming the match live for supporters on Wednesday 14 May.
The Club is throwing open its gates and to hold a party in Glasgow for the thousands of Rangers fans without tickets for the final in Manchester, meaning supporters can experience together the Club's greatest European night since 1972.This will allow families and friends alike to come along and enjoy what could be one of the most memorable nights in the Club's history.
Chief Executive Martin Bain said today: "To reach the UEFA Cup Final is a tremendous achievement for the Club and everyone involved is looking forward to what is sure to be a great occasion next Wednesday night.
"The final has already been billed as the 'friendly final' due to our close association with Dick Advocaat and a large contingent of the Rangers family will travel in good spirits to Manchester.
"We also want to make sure the thousands of other fans without tickets have the opportunity to experience the party atmosphere and that is why we are creating a celebration venue in Glasgow, Rangers home city. Supporters and families will be able to turn up at the gates on the night, with entry free of charge.
"The Club will be working with Glasgow City Council over the next few days to ensure an extra special night and we will be making further announcements in the coming days. In the meantime, supporters should check the Club's website for all official and accurate updates on the Final."
Rangers has announced the appointment of Mark Hateley as the Club's official 'Fans Ambassador' for the UEFA Cup Final in Manchester. Mark's role will be to communicate the do's and don'ts, and to communicate how to support the Club in an official capacity.
Martin Bain said: "We are delighted that Club legend Mark Hateley will represent Rangers as UEFA Cup Final Ambassador. Mark continues to play a key role behind the scenes at the Club and his European pedigree speaks for itself."

Dear Ray

It’s a dream come true for us to be in the UEFA Cup Final and we’re relishing the chance to come up against Dick Advocaat’s side on May 14th. I would like to personally thank each and every one of you who has been on this European journey with us – and it’s not over yet!

Over the season, and not just in last night's game, for us to put together the team we have and achieve so much has been fantastic.

From my own point of view, I thought I was at the stage where European finals were well past me so I'm delighted. But that is mainly for everyone at the Club, from Sir David Murray to Martin Bain and everyone else associated with us and who has supported us this year.

We knew we would be under a fair amount of pressure in this game and in the matches I've seen Fiorentina play, they did that to all the teams they faced. When I see the level of commitment we showed to keep the game at 0-0, it was fantastic and I'm just delighted we’ve reached the final.

Nacho was down as one of our penalty takers and he practices them regularly. I was worried going into the penalties as David Moyes had told me when Everton lost to Fiorentina on penalties, he thought they were excellent.

Credit must go to all the boys who stepped up to take them. It takes courage to do that and these guys did the job for us, as did the whole team last night.

It’s been an incredible season so far, and the fact that we are still in the running for three competitions is testament to our squad of players and also to the thousands of fans who have supported us throughout.

Thank you for your continued support.

Walter Smith

Buyer Beware

Posted: 25th April, 2008

Monday 17th March.

The first round of ticket sales has ended for the 2008 UEFA Cup final, to be played at the City of Manchester Stadium in England on 14 May.

Lottery decider
The general public were invited to apply for up to two tickets before midnight CET last night, and allocation will now be decided by lottery with every valid application entering the ballot, regardless of the time of submission within the application period.

Ticket allocation
The net capacity of the City of Manchester Stadium for the final will be 44,000, of which a quarter were available for sale to fans worldwide. Around 60 per cent of the stadium capacity is reserved for supporters of the two finalists, with each club able to take up to 13,000 tickets and distribute these directly to their fans. A total of 7,000 tickets will be allocated to the European football family, comprising UEFA, national associations, commercial partners and broadcasters, and the Local Organising Committee.

Tout warning
Once the two finalists are known at the beginning of May, the clubs will communicate in detail how they operate the sales to their fans. UEFA encourages supporters not to be lured into deals with touts, who not only demand exorbitant prices but are often not in possession of the tickets they purport to have for sale.

Terms and conditions
All applicants are bound by the ticketing terms and conditions. Action will be taken in cases of infringement. Online applications will be checked against police data to ensure that anyone banned from stadiums is unsuccessful in any attempt to purchase tickets. Persons attending the final are warned that tickets will be personalised and that security checks at the stadium are planned. UEFA underlines that no tickets are being distributed via agencies or brokers.

Hello all,

As we approach the end of what could be one of the most successful seasons in our long and proud history, it would seem that the SPL have no great interest in lending a helping hand.

A petition has been set up asking that should we reach the UEFA Cup final the SPL extend the season and allow us a free week prior to the final itself.

If you wish to sign the petition then you will find the link on www.rangersassembly.com

Here's to a wee win tonight.

UEFA CUP SEMI-FINAL FIRST LEG

UEFA CUP SEMI-FINAL FIRST LEG
Venue: Ibrox Date: Thursday, 24 April Kick-off: 1945 BST
Coverage: MGRSC LIVE "Club 27" KO 4.30 am

Smith has faith in depleted Gers
News conference: Rangers boss Walter Smith
Rangers manager Walter Smith believes his patched-up team has enough quality to overcome Fiorentina in the Uefa Cup semi-final first leg at Ibrox.

Barry Ferguson, Allan McGregor and Lee McCulloch are among the many regulars missing for the Glasgow side.

"The fewer players you have, the easier it is to select a team," said Smith.

"We have changed our formation at different times during the European run and, if we have to do so again, then we are quite capable of handling that."

Like skipper Ferguson, Kevin Thomson is suspended, while Charlie Adam, Steven Naismith, Chris Burke and DaMarcus Beasely are also on the Ibrox injury list.

"We have looked at the opposition and then we will look at our own squad and select from there," added Smith.

"We have a requisite number available to us so we are quite confident the side we put out will acquit themselves well.

"We haven't played the same system in all the European games we've had this season, we have changed it now and again.

"For instance, the last time, when we were in Lisbon, we changed it around a little bit."

Rangers are just two games away from their first European final in 36 years and Smith wants another big push from a squad still in the hunt for a four-trophy haul.

"We were a little bit surprised to reach this stage and it has been a terrific achievement by all the players," he continued.

"We have worked extremely hard and have enjoyed a little bit of luck along the way.

"But, now that we're here, we can say for the first time that we are looking forward to two very tough games but also the possibility of getting to a European final.

"For a coach or a player, it's a big thing in their career."

Mutu is someone you respect as having an exceptional level of ability

Walter Smith on Adrian Mutu

On their way to the last four, Fiorentina beat Everton on penalties and Smith has been in touch with Toffees manager David Moyes.

"I've spoken to David with regard to the game and he thought he was very unfortunate, especially in the second game, not to go through.

"But he also impressed upon me what a good team he thought Fiorentina were and he left me in no doubt that they are an exceptionally good team.

"Outside the Champions League games we've had, I felt Werder Bremen were an exceptionally good team and I would put Fiorentina on a par with them.

"They have shown that this season with their league campaign, where they currently look as though they could qualify for the Champions League above AC Milan, which is a terrific achievement for them."

Adrian Mutu is Fiorentina's leading scorer and has bagged six goals in the Uefa Cup.

However, Smith knows the Romanian striker is not the only danger facing his side.

"I always think it's dangerous to choose one player when you are looking at a team," he said.

"Fiorentina have a number of players who can cause problems, as we have ourselves.

"Mutu is someone you respect as having an exceptional level of ability and Fiorentina seem to be bringing out the best in him.

"But I think it would be wrong to say that he's the only threat that Fiorentina have."

Under 19s Do The Double

Posted: 24th April, 2008

RANGERS under-19s have secured a sensational domestic double thanks to a terrific 3-1 extra-time victory over Celtic in the final of the SFA Youth Cup at Hampden tonight.
In what turned out to be a remarkable match Cillian Sheridan opened the scoring for John McLaughlin's side after 61 minutes and with the full time fast approaching Billy Kirkwood's side looked dead and buried.
John Fleck had other ideas and the 16-year-old produced a wonder goal in injury time before substitute Andrew Little bagged a second in the fourth minute of extra-time.
With 119 minutes played and with Celtic throwing everything forward, including keeper Paul Skinner, Fleck then sprinted up the pitch again before rolling the ball into the empty net to clinch a famous win.
It was a comeback that Walter Smith's first-team would have been proud of and the manager was on-hand to watch the club's starlets receive the trophy for a second consecutive year.
Over 6000 Old Firm fans travelled to the national stadium to watch the action and both sides put in great effort throughout a pulsating 120 minutes.
Strangely, the first-half failed to live up to pre-match expectations and it was Celtic that had the best opportunities to open the scoring.
On 17 minutes the Parkhead youngsters decided to play a bit of head tennis in the Gers' 18-yard box with skipper Jason Marr finding Luca Santonocito before Daniel Lafferty latter nodded the ball inches over Scott Gallacher's goal from six yards.
On 34 minutes another chance came their way when left-back Carlo Monti skinned William McLachlan and Ross Perry on the wing and found Paul Cahillane at the back-post.
The striker's neat touch took him beyond Steven Kinniburgh but his deft chip from close range again went over the bar.
Rangers struggled to break through their rival's stubborn rearguard and long-range efforts looked to be their best, and only, option.
An Andrew Shinnie drive which narrowly missed Skinner's right-hand post was as near as the Light Blues came to an opening goal in the first period.
Kirkwood elected to make his first change of the match during the interval with Andrew Little replacing Isa Bagci.
Northern Ireland international Little had been playing in the centre of defence in recent games but was asked to play in his natural position for the second 45 minutes and put in a brilliant shift.
Celtic. however, were to get theoir noses in front on 61 minutes.
A poor clearance from Scott Gallacher fell to left winger Monti who fired in a low, dangerous cross which arrived at the feet of Sheridan.
The powerful striker's first effort was blocked by Ross Harvey but he made no mistake with his second which found the back of the net.
With the game going into injury time and legs jaded it was going to take something special for the Gers to get back in to the game and it came from Fleck.
The Scotland star sprinted from his own half and powered his way past three Celtic defenders before launching a rocket left-foot rocket into the opposite top corner from the edge of the 18-yard box.
His brilliant solo effort took the game into extra time and it looked as though the team with the most energy in the tank would come out on top,
Thankfully it was the team in Light Blue that had more in reserve and in the 4th minute of added time they got their noses in front for the first time in the match.
A shot from right-back William McLachlan from distance was saved by Skinner but the ball fell at the feet of Andrew Little.
His first shot was desperately blocked again by the grounded keeper but the forward delighfully back-heeled the ball into the empty net.
Fleck then put some icing on the cake in the final seconds of the game.
Skinner sprinted up to the pitch for a Celtic corner and was punished when Scott Gallacher punched clear.
Fleck was the recipient and he again darted 60 yards before scoring from 20 yards.
It was the perfect end to a terrific final and the Gers players celebrated in style after the final whistle as Captain Shinnie lifted the trophy.
CELTIC: Skinner, Gallacher, Monti, Marr, Lafferty, Tidser, Cawley, Towell, Sheridan (Bunting 72), Cahillane, Santonocito (Graham 66)
Subs: Marshall, Ross, Foley
RANGERS: Gallacher; McLachlan, Perry, Harvey, Kinniburgh; Stirling (Kind Bendisken 64), Shinnie, Ness, Efrem (Hutton 76); Bagci (Little 45), Fleck
Subs: Vaiculis, Craig
Referee: William Collum

Weir Banned For Cup Clash

Posted: 18th April, 2008

THE SFA have confirmed today that Davie Weir and Celtic's Gary Caldwell have been banned for one match following the post-match aggro at Parkhead last night.
As we revealed last night, both players were ordered to referee Kenny Clark's room for getting involved as players scuffled at the final whistle.
They were reported to the SFA this morning for violent conduct and have been suspended for the next match which means Weir is out of the St Johnstone Cup semi-final and Caldwell misses Celtic's SPL game with Aberdeen on Saturday.
Celtic captain Stephen McManus was also spoken to by the referee and reported for aggressive behaviour. He was given three penalty points which takes him to 15 and therefore three short of threshhold.
Carlos Cuellar's red card for hand ball automatically rules him out of the next Celtic match on April 27. However, the penalty carries only five points and that leaves him on 17 points.
That means he is one booking away from a further one-match ban.

Bad News On Lee & Allan

Posted: 18th April, 2008

by Lindsay Herron
RANGERS' quest for a successful end to an already remarkable campaign has been dealt a blow due to injuries to Lee McCulloch and Allan McGregor.
McCulloch is suffering from a major ankle injury and McGregor has problems in the same area following last night's Old Firm derby.
McGregor is looking at a two-week lay-off which means he will miss Saturday's Scottish Cup semi-final with St Johstone, probably both legs of the UEFA Cup semi-final with Fiorentina and the final Celtic match on April 27
McCulloch problems appear to be worse and he is looking at being out for longer than that.
Lee was caught late by Paul Hartley to earn the Celtic man a yellow card in last night's match and the trauma to the soft tissue is so bad that the full extent of th damage could not be revealed.
Murray Park medical team members will have him scanned again tomorrow.
It means Neil Alexander has got the gloves for the forthcoming matches and the McCulloch injury gives boss Walter Smith a problem for the first leg with Fiorentina in particular.
Barry Ferguson and Kevin Thomson are suspended and Charlie Adam is also out injured with a knee problem so it leaves him short in midfield.
Assistant boss Ally McCoist said: "It's a blow to lose both players. Allan has been outstanding for us but we have no problem bringing Neil in. He is an international keeper and that's why we brought him here.
"Lee's injury is also a concern because there is so much swelling and clearly it gives us a problem for the home leg with Fiorentina in particular."
Ferguson and Thomson, however, are expected to play against St Johnstone on Sunday.

SPL sets crucial Old Firm dates

Posted: 8th April, 2008

Celtic will host Old Firm rivals Rangers twice inside 11 days in the Scottish Premier League run-in, it was confirmed on Monday night. The announcement of the post-split fixtures threw up a double-header that could ultimately decide the destiny of the SPL title.

The Old Firm rivals meet a week on Wednesday - April 16 - in the final fixture before the split, a match that has twice been rearranged after the original January 2 meeting was postponed.

They face off again on Sunday, April 27 in the standout match of the post-split fixtures.

Sandwiched between the mouth-watering clashes is a clash between Celtic and Aberdeen, also at Parkhead, on April 19.

Rangers do not have a league fixture that weekend because of their possible involvement in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.

CBD MGRSC Branches out

Posted: 25th March, 2008

"MGRSC and ORSA have had contact from a number of fans keen to set up a new Melbourne CBD RSC. After discussions, Puggs Mahone's Irish Bar, will show the Rangers v Celtic game on Saturday 29th March in the downstairs bar. This will be a 'Rangers Only' venue with a private area reserved for this match. Puggs is at 106-112 Hardware Street in the CBD. For further info or directions please call 9810 0060 and ask for the manager, Jason or email - puggmahones@opendoorpubco.com.au. It is hoped that after this game, the final run to the SPL flag and other competitions will also be shown if a good crowd turns up this weekend. After a few attempts in the CBD, this venue seems to fit the bill with a great location, drinks promos, extended licensing hours and a manager willing to give it a go for CBD Rangers fans. MGRSC wish this new RSC all the best and we hope Karen and the lads can make a success of this opportunity. If successful it is hoped that the new RSC will initially form on the basis as a satellite club to MGRSC, with all the associated benefits this brings including ORSA membership."

Gers given dates for key clashes
Fri 21 Mar, 12:45 PM

Rangers' fixture schedule became slightly clearer on Friday when the SPL and the SFA confirmed dates for important games next month. The postponed Old Firm derby which should have taken place at Parkhead in January will now be played on Wednesday, April 16, with a 7.45pm kick-off.

The Scottish Cup sixth-round replay between Rangers and Partick Thistle will take place on Sunday, April 13.

That was the date the semi-final against St Johnstone should have been played and that game will now go ahead at Hampden on Sunday, April 20 at 3pm.

If Rangers progress to the semi-final of the UEFA Cup, they will come up against either PSV Eindhoven or Fiorentina four days later.

The Ibrox club already faced a packed fixture schedule and Wednesday's Scottish Cup quarter-final draw with Partick only succeeded in adding to the fixture congestion.

But SFA chief executive Gordon Smith believes they have come to the best possible solution to ease the pressure on Walter Smith's men.

He said: "We were very conscious of the fixture congestion that is being faced presently and having looked at all possibilities and discussed these with the SPL, the SFL and the clubs, we are delighted we have found the best solution available in the circumstances."

UEFA Cup - Three-match ban for Darcheville

Posted: 17th January, 2008

UEFA Cup - Three-match ban for Darcheville
Eurosport - Wed, 16 Jan 10:45:00 2008
Rangers striker Jean-Claude Darcheville has been handed a three-match ban by UEFA following his red card against Lyon.
The Frenchman will miss both legs of the UEFA Cup clash against Panathinaikos next month, plus the first leg of the tie against Braga or Werder Bremen should his team-mates reach the last 16.
Darcheville was sent off late in the 3-0 defeat by Lyon at Ibrox in December, which ended the Ibrox club's Champions League campaign.
The 32-year-old stamped on Kim Kallstrom in retaliation not long after missing an open goal that would have brought Rangers level as they sought a point to go through.
Rangers have the right to appeal but are waiting to receive the full report on the decision from UEFA before they choose whether to act.
Darcheville was unhappy with referee Lubos Michel's decision.
After the game, he said: "I always take responsibility for myself but the referee got it wrong. Maybe it was a yellow card. I was very surprised when I saw the red card."
Kallstrom had also played down the "little stamp" which caused him no damage.
The Swede said: "All footballers are there to play in front of these fantastic crowds and there is a lot of emotion, and I hope he will not get a long suspension because it was just frustration."

Honours
Rangers hold the world record for number of domestic league championships won, racking up 51 titles. They hold the record for domestic trebles, with seven so far. Rangers won their 100th major trophy in 2000, the first club in the world to reach that milestone. First British club to reach the final of a European tournament. Have competed in European competitions in more seasons than any other British club, 46 times as of and including 2006-07.
